Official opening of the new waste-to-energy plant Ruhleben

Gummersbach (June 2012) – After a construction period of three years the waste incineration plant Ruhleben, modernised by Fisia Babcock Environment (FBE), was officially opened on Monday, 18th June 2012, by the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit. The new ultramodern combustion line A, which is replacing four aged combustion lines, has one of the worldwide largest moving grates for waste treatment plants. By timely completion of the project and trouble-free commissioning FBE has proved again to count amongst the worldwide leading enterprises in the field of engineering and construction of thermal waste treatment plants and flue gas cleaning systems.

The facility for thermal waste treatment in the Berlin district of Ruhleben ensures by means of a combustion capacity of 500,000 tons per annum the reliable sustained waste disposal for more than half of the Berlin population and is, thereby, the core component of waste disposal of the city of Berlin. In addition, it provides the required electricity and district heating for 5% of the Berlin households and contributes simultaneously to the recycling of a quarter of the total waste. The modern and efficient flue gas cleaning technology installed by FBE warrants that the emissions are kept significantly below the legally allowed limits. Also the production of about 90MW thermal power is realized nearly CO2-neutral. Thereby, the plant delivers in total a substantial positive contribution to the protection of the environment.

After a Europe-wide invitation to tender the Gummersbach plant constructor was awarded in 2009 the order for the construction of the new combustion line including the flue gas cleaning plant. As the general contractor FBE was responsible, in addition to planning and construction, also for the complete structural engineering, the technical building installations, and also for the electric, instrumentation and control engineering.
