There are different reasons for modernising flue gas cleaning plants. One of the most common of these is an improvement to flue gas cleaning, due to intensified emission limits as a result of changed legislation or permits. Equally, a change in fuel or fuel quality can necessitate an adjustment. But sometimes it is simply a matter of performance and economic efficiency. For example, if it is planned to operate a plant at a higher performance level or with a larger throughput, this has a direct effect on the flue gases. Modernisation of the flue gas cleaning plant can also be considered to optimise the consumption of operating materials and other operating costs. The reasons are diverse, and in most cases, modernisation pays off in hard cash.
For example, CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) can lead to a clear reduction in pressure losses within the flue gas ducts. First, measurements and analyses are carried out, and then the flow of the flue gases is optimised by means of the design and installation of flow-optimised guidance systems. Every millibar of lost pressure saved in this manner reduces the operating costs of the plant.
Steinmüller Babcock Environment offers not only the modernisation of individual components and areas in the plant inventory, but also the retrofitting of complete process stages, with all of the necessary ancillary facilities. In many older power stations, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) must be retrofitted to comply with tougher NOx emission limits. The special challenge is on the one hand integrating the SCR catalyst in the process between the boiler economiser and the air preheater. On the other hand, a suitable layout concept must be developed in the existing plant for the heavy, large-volume SCR catalyst. Naturally, the ongoing operation of the plant must be impaired as little as possible during these construction measures, which is why short conversion times are essential. In order to implement such complex modernisation plans in a cost and time-optimised manner, a company must have the required range of experience, both in engineering and assembly.
