Gummersbach, 25. Juli 2019. HZI Steinmüller GmbH based in Gummersbach has been awarded the contract for the modernisation of the Joint Venture Waste to Energy plant Ludwigshafen. The scope of supply and services includes planning and construction of the boiler system including grate and ancillary equipment for two lines. The client is the municipal operator GML – Gemeinschafts-Müllheizkraftwerk Ludwigshafen GmbH. Commissioning of the second line is planned for summer 2024.
With the project IGNIS (Latin: fire), the GML in Ludwigshafen is planning a comprehensive revamping of the Waste to Energy plant in order to ensure the waste disposal of the region for the next 25 years. In the plant, municipal and commercial waste from around 1,000,000 people from the region are thermally recycled. The Joint Venture Waste to Energy plant Ludwigshafen was built over 50 years ago, the two oldest of the three boilers are now 30 and 23 years old. A full revamping of the three lines would not be economically viable, and so GML consequently decided to invest in two new Waste to Energy lines replacing two of the existing lines which will be dismantled. Thus, the two new lines can be set into operation without restricting the operation of the existing three lines too much. On average, 90% of capacity will be maintained over the five years of reconstruction.
Depending on the operation status of the boilers the two new lines will contribute 90,000 – 100,000 t/a per year each to the overall plant treatment capacity of 235.000 t/a, with a thermal boiler performance of 30 MW each. The boilers generate high-pressure steam, which is converted into district heating and electricity in the neighbouring district heating plant of the regional supplier TWL AG. Steinmüller Babcock convinced in the tender with a technical concept combining a tailor-made solution with an overall attractive economic offer.
With the project IGNIS (Latin: fire) the GML plans a comprehensive revamping of the MHKW Ludwigshafen, in order to ensure the waste disposal of the region for the next 25 years. An essential part of the modernisation is the construction of two new lines, built by Steinmüller Babcock.
